Maria's Story
Maria Mimosa
She/They
With over 25 years of experience, Maria Mimosa is an educator and advocate known for their unique blend of humor, empathy, and insight. Originally from Finland and having lived in Sweden, New York City, and now Philadelphia, Maria’s diverse life experiences shape their perspective and approach. As a late-diagnosed autistic person with ADHD, they bring a deep sense of empathy and resilience to their work with both humans and animals.
Maria’s background spans academic education, dance, performing arts, fitness, theatre, and animal behavior, equipping them with a broad toolkit to support growth and healing. Through deconstruction and decolonization, they empower individuals to challenge societal systems and cultivate more authentic, compassionate connections with themselves and others.
In recent years, Maria has undergone profound personal healing after escaping an abusive relationship with their dog, Mr. Chewie. Recovering from PTSD, C-PTSD, and significant cognitive and physical challenges has deepened their understanding of trauma, resilience, and the vital role of compassion and self-advocacy in recovery.
As the owner and founder of Pawfident, Maria has been focusing on introducing new ways to deepen the bonds between pets and their families. Integrating Learner-Centered Training into their approach has refined their understanding of these relationships, helping clients foster stronger, more empathetic connections with their pets and supporting lasting emotional growth. This, combined with a broad understanding of psychology, trauma, and behavior, allows Maria to guide clients through transformative processes with care and intention.
Maria’s work also addresses the broader societal, political, and cultural contexts that shape behavior. By deconstructing the systems that perpetuate limiting beliefs and patterns, they help clients confront difficult truths, create space for healing, and promote lasting transformation. With their experience in trauma recovery and the Learner-Centered Training framework, Maria guides clients in navigating challenges with empathy, resilience, and a focus on long-term emotional growth.
